New Terrace Takes Shape

The development of the area to the rear of the hall
is gathering pace.
The two bricklayers who did most of the work on the new
hall back in 2006 have created a new terrace from
matching stone. To complete the job, York Stone flags
are due to be laid at the start of July, in time for the
‘Rhapsody & Blues’ event on Saturday, 4th July.

Chairman Retires After Six Years
 |
|
Anne Nuttall (Secretary),
Susan Burgess (Chairman), Meg Burford (with
flowers) and Trustee Stephanie
Sibbles-Horridge |
After six years at the helm, in which she saw the
building of a new hall, Meg Burford stepped down as
Chairman of the Hall Management Committee at the AGM in
December.
At an informal lunch at the hall for Meg and her
husband Alec, Trustees and friends paid tribute to her
work. New Chairman, Susan Burgess, presented Meg with a
bouquet of flowers whilst Vice Chairman, Steve Williams
presented her with a pictorial record of her six years
in charge by way of a photo album and a "bonus" DVD.
Meg Burford will stay on the Committee and as a
Trustee.
Hall Secures Funding For Site
Development

Funding for environmental works and landscaping has
been secured from Lancashire Environmental Fund. The
scheme will see soft-planting areas and a terrace at the
rear of the hall, as well as seating and information
boards at the front. Chorley Borough Council is also
contributing towards improvements to sport, recreational
and other facilities on the site.
Car Park To Be Resurfaced

Extended in 2008, the car park at the front of the
hall will see more improvements in 2009. The Management
Committee will use some funds from Chorley Borough
Council to resurface the car park, improve the drainage
and mark out parking bays, including a number for
blue-badge holders. There will also be markings to
prevent people from blocking access to the overflow car
park at the rear of the hall. Work is expected to
commence in the spring.
New Signs For Car Park Users

New signs around the site will remind visitors that
the car parks are for use on a short stay basis, with
priority given to those actually visiting an event at
the hall. Signs will also direct vehicles to the
overflow car park at the rear of the hall on those
occasions when an event attracts a larger audience. In
addition, when an event goes on until midnight, a sign
will remind users about noise when leaving the site.
Another Conference For Hall

After welcoming the Lancashire Local History
Federation "At Home" day in October, which saw 85 people
enjoy a history conference staged by Brindle Historical
Society, a similar event is coming to the hall in 2009.
The Confederation of British Archaeology in the
north-west has booked the hall in May for their all day
conference. The hall offers facilities for conferences
up to 90 people seated at tables or 135 theatre-style,
along with in-house catering and ample car parking.

Hall Gets Funding For Landscaping
The hall has been awarded a grant towards landscaping
the site. The plans include creating an extended terrace
at the rear of the hall as well as soft planting around
that area and the rear car park. New notice boards,
direction signs and site signs are to be installed as
well as a bin store. There will be two orientation
boards - one showing the history of the village and the
hall and the other with suggested walks from the hall
car park. Bike racks, seating and bollards to protect
new paving area to the front and side of the hall will
complement improvements to the front car park. There
will be improved drainage and car parking spaces
(including disabled parking) will be marked out.
Planned sports facilities by way of a boules court and
possible 'Sports Wall' will not now go ahead, mainly due
to lack of demand and the high cost of installing the
sports wall (at least £150,000).
The boundary at the bottom of the site will be hidden
with new trees, as will the fencing owned by United
Utilities which hides their adjoining facility.
Chairman To Step Down

Meg Burford is to step down from her role as Chairman
after the Annual General Meeting in the autumn. Meg
played a major part in the re-development of the hall,
which saw the new hall being opened in April 2006.
War Memorial For Hall Site?
The Management Committee have asked Vice-Chairman and
local historian, Steve Williams, to investigate erecting
a war memorial at the entrance to the site on Water
Street. His research has shown that the memorial in
Brindle Parish Church (St. James') was not the village
war memorial, as first thought. Back in 1919, the idea
for the Parish Institute on the current site came from
men who fought in the trenches during the First World
War. They wanted a place to meet and in memory of the
men who did not return.
Hall Used For Village Wedding

The Cranshaw family from Batesons Farm in the village
used the hall's facilities to host the reception and
evening event at their daughter's wedding in July. Local
girl Katie married Robert Smith and the hall and
specially erected marquee meant they could keep the
event in the village. The evening celebration was
attended by many local farmers and villagers, being
hailed as a great success by all those who attended (and
left quietly by one o'clock!).
Commenting on the hall being used for weddings,
Vice-Chairman Steve Williams said "Whilst we welcome
enquiries for similar events from local people, it was a
'one off' and a special event for a local girl who has
been very involved in the local community all her life.
I certainly cannot remember a similar event at the hall
over the last 25 years or so. All-in-all it was a really
good 'village do', with many locals reminiscing about
similar events in the old hall and even the old
Institute".

Hall Awaits Grant News
The Hall Management Committee is awaiting a decision
from Chorley Council in respect of a grant towards
landscaping works at the hall. It will then trigger a
further application to the Lancashire Environmental Fund
for the final amount to finish the work, making the
whole site even more environmentally friendly and
blending into its rural setting.
Hall Improvements Continue
Work re-starts on extending the front car park at the
start of April, at the same time the Joiners are back in
the hall putting in a new loft access, paid partly by
the National Lottery "Awards for All" and a small, but
welcome donation from Brindle Historical Society.
Monday, 21st November 2007
Car Park Improvements Begin
Contractors were back on site at the start of
November extending the car park. It is part of the
Hall's on-going scheme to improve the surrounding are at
the same time provide improved facilities for Hall
users. The work is expected to be finished by the end of
November. Following that, the Cubs will be planting
shrubs and trees a round the site as part of their
community work.
Car park users are asked not to block exits and the road
down the side of the building, where extra car parking
spaces are available on the old tennis courts. In
addition, motorists are reminded that priority is given
to those people attending an event in the hall. People
parking on the car park do so at their own risk and the
Hall Management Committee have no control over people
parking on Water Street or on the public highway.
New Steps

We have put some steps at the back of the Hall to
make it more safer and accessible.
Monday, 29th October 2007
Car Park Improvements Due To Start
Work is expected to commence on the 29th October to
extend the front car park and the contractor should be
on site for two to three weeks. Hall users are asked to
park on the old tennis courts to the rear of the hall,
accessed by the road to the right of the car park.

New Community Hall Scoops Prize
The new Brindle Community Hall, which was officially
opened in August 2006, has won an award from Chorley
Civic Society. Members of the Management Committee will
collect the award at a ceremony in Chorley Town Hall on
the 27th September.
Trees To Be Planted
Trees felled at the Community Hall in March this year
are to be replaced as part of a scheme to improve the
Hall's surroundings. Work to increase the capacity of
the car park will also see trees and shrubs planted
around the entrance and site. The local Scouts will be
doing some of the planting as part of their community
involvement programme and work is expected to start at
the beginning of October.
Saturday 31st March 2007
Timber! Hall Landscaping Scheme
Begins
Trustees and volunteers were on site early on
Saturday morning to remove trees at the entrance and
surrounding the car park. This is the first phase of
improving access and adding additional car parking
spaces for the new hall.
On completion of the work, the old gate posts (which
were taken down a couple of years ago) will be
reinstated, the car park extended, and new trees and
shrubs will be planted.
Brindle Historical Society members were on site to
record the event (as well as lending a hand!).
News Special
New Hall now officially open!
Despite the rain, over 200 people attended the
official opening of the new hall on Saturday 19th
August. The hall was opened by Mr Ralph Power of Water
Street, Brindle - the son of one of the Institute
founders back in 1923.
Ralph arrived in an unusual "carriage" - a fire
engine complete with siren and flashing lights - much to
the surprise of the awaiting guests including the Deputy
Mayor of Chorley!
Speeches were made by Ralph Power, Hall Chairman Meg
Burford with a response and a vote of thanks by Lindsay
Hoyle, the MP for Chorley. The afternoon was hosted by
vice-Chairman Steve Williams who paid tribute to Meg and
to all of the people who contributed to the project over
the past few years.
Brindle Band were in attendance, who played at the
original opening 83 years and one day earlier on the
18th August 1923. The Horwich Morris Men also
entertained, and the day was rounded off with a
celebratory dance in the evening.

1932 Picture comes to light
Thanks to the family of Ralph Power (who
officially opened the new hall recently) for
allowing us to feature this picture here.
It shows Ralph (back left) playing in front of

going in the Brindle Historical Society archive.

Sunday 20th August 2006

New Hall officially opened
The new hall was officially opened on Saturday, 19th
August by one of Brindle's oldest residents, 84 year old
Ralph Power.
Ralph, born in Brindle in 1922, lives adjacent to the
hall on Water Street. His father was a Trustee and dug
the foundations for the original institute, as well as
seconding the vote of thanks at the official opening
back in August 1923.
The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of
Chorley, Cllr. Adrian Lowe and Lindsay Hoyle, the MP for
Chorley, who proposed the vote of thanks to the
Management Committee for their work on the project.
Nearly 200 people attended on the day, with a further
100 attending a celebration dance in the evening.
Photographs will be on the website shortly.

Two more successful events add to
fundraising total
Fundraising to add the finishing touches to the hall
continues to go well.
Friday 14th July saw a Bastille evening go down a
storm (pardon the pun!) with Can Can dancers, boules,
French music and food. The following evening was also a
sell out, with Hoghton Players presenting two one-act
plays in the main hall.
Some of the money raised will go toward the cost of
landscaping around the new hall.
Saturday 15th July 2006

Bulldozers back again!
The bulldozers returned to the site last week, not to
demolish anything, but to improve landscaping around the
new hall and level off the top end of the field.
Local contractor Pawson Plant are carrying out the
works for us, which also include adding a new path to
the side of the hall, as well as improvements to the car
park.
The Management Committee are looking at replacing one
of the tennis courts, which were donated by Chorley
Borough Council in 1982, with a multi-use games area.
Tuesday 23rd May 2006

Football Talk adds to fundraising
total
A talk by former centre-forward Paul Fletcher added
nearly £1000 to our fundraising total.
Paul gave a talk about his football career and his
recent work building some of the country's top football
stadiums. The evening was hosted by ex-Football League
Match Official Steve Williams, who is also the vice
Chairman of the hall.
This event and others planned for the rest of the
year will help raise funds to add the finishing touches
to the new hall including improving the car park,
providing a flagged area at the rear of the hall and to
buy new chairs.
Monday 8th May 2006

Cuckoo Walk attracts record entry
The annual Brindle Cuckoo Walk on Saturday, 6th May
attracted a record attendance. 165 people set off from
the Community Hall on walks ranging from three to twenty
four miles.
Walk Organiser, Alec Burford, said "The
organisation went very smoothly due to the hard work of
volunteers. The Hall Management Committee would like to
thank everyone for their support, and look forward to
seeing all walkers again next year".
The event raised nearly £800 for the Hall, and it
will used for purchasing new chairs and improving the
paving around the hall.
Next year's walk will be on Saturday, 28th April.
Sunday 16th April 2006

Hall Open Day A Success
The Hall Open Day on Easter Saturday attracted over
400 people, and included an Easter Egg hunt for the
children, an Easter Bonnet Parade and exhibitions in the
hall on the history of the Community Hall from 1923 to
present day.
Other organisations such as the Mothers Union,
Brindle Women's Institute, Brindle Historical Society,
B.O.F.F's (Brindle Over 55's), Brindle Book Club and the
Scouts were represented. Cuckoo Walk organiser, Mike
McGovern, reported considerable interest in the walks on
the 6th May, as did Steve Williams who has organised a
football evening, with guest speaker Paul Fletcher, on
the 22nd May.
Hall Secretary, Anne Nuttall, received over £1,000 in
donations towards equipment for the new building. Hall
Chairman, Meg Burford, said "The day was a great
success. Everyone was so impressed with the new building
and very supportive of our efforts".
The hall is now open for business and taking bookings
(see our new Bookings
page). The official opening will take place on Saturday,
19th August at 2.30 p.m., almost 83 years to the day
when the first building (Brindle Parish Institute) was
opened on the site.
22nd March 2006
Finished!
Brindle now has a Brand New Community Hall!
After just under 5 months of construction, all
building work is now finished. The hall passed all
relevant inspections and completion papers were signed
on the afternoon of 16th March.
All that is left now is to prepare the hall for the
public viewing on Easter Saturday, 15th April. Watch
this space for more details of this event nearer the
time, and for our new website which is nearing
completion.

Almost There!
The scaffolding is down, the brickwork is done, the
slates are on... nearly there! The Hall will soon be
finished, with an anticipated hand-over date from the
builders of the 17th March.
There are still a few things to do internally and
although there is a great deal of interest in booking
the hall, bookings are not being taken until the early
part of April.
An Open Day is planned for Easter Saturday, 15th
April, when all are more than welcome to visit the Hall
and view the modern facilities.

Construction Update
3 months in to the project and things are moving
quickly. As you can see from the latest pictures below,
the roof is on, internal walls have been erected and
wiring work has been done.
Keep checking back to this site for regular updates,
and watch out for a new look site being launched in the
New Year.
24th October 2005
Building Begins!
It is just under four weeks since the old hall was
demolished, and building work on the new hall is well
under way. The foundations have been laid and the steel
frame of the hall has been erected, giving some sense of
how big the new hall will be.
Here are a few pictures of the new hall taken late
last week:
26th September 2005
Hall bulldozed!
Watched by a small crowd, the digger moved in at 8am
and took just 90 minutes to completely flatten the old
hall.
The site will now cleared in preparation for the
foundations to be laid and the new hall to be built,
which is expected to take around 16 weeks. You can keep
up to date with the building work by checking this site
which will be regularly updated with the latest news and
information.
Here is a picture special of the demolition...from
start to finish!
23rd September 2005
Hall to be bulldozed on Monday!
Work to start building the new hall gets underway
this coming Monday (26th September) as our contractors
demolish the old hall. Work is expected to begin at 8am
(if you want to come along with your camera to capture
this historic event!) and will take around two days for
the demolition to be completed.
This will be followed quickly by work on preparing
the site and foundations. Once they are in place it
should take about 16 weeks to complete the project.
These pictures were taken a few
days ago, showing the hall fenced off ready for Monday's
demolition.

4th August 2005
New hall will be built - work starts
end of September
Yes we have done it! Thanks to the hard work and
generosity of many people, locally and further a field,
the necessary funds to build a new community hall have
been secured.
Work will start at the end of September taking down
the old wooden buildings that served us well for over 23
years. This will be followed quickly by work on
preparing the site and foundations. Once they are in
place it should take about 16 weeks to complete the
project.
Public meeting Monday, 15th August
We would like to invite everyone to a Public Meeting
in St. James' Church on Water Street at 7.30 p.m. on
Monday, 15th August. We will give a short presentation,
including a computer generated view of the new building
and its facilities. You will also be able to ask
questions about our future plans for the hall and site
overall.

For Sale
The hall is now up for sale on auction site
ebay.co.uk and will be sold to the highest bidder!
Hurry though, as the auction is due to end on Wednesday
11th August.
Click here to view the listing, and please be aware
that if you're the winning bidder, you'll need to
collect it!
27th July 2005
Hall up for award
The Hall has been short listed for an award in the
'Heart of the Community' competition run by Lancashire
Evening Post. The winners will be announced at a
ceremony at Ribby Hall, Wrea Green, near Preston on the
4th August. Winners will receive a cheque for £500
towards their project.
Fundraising going well
£13,300 has been donated in the last 2 weeks, leaving
just £9,700 to be raised; this will be supplemented by a
further £1,400 in Gift Aid to be reclaimed from the
Inland Revenue. We have managed to get an extension to
our deadline until the 14th August, and we also expect
to hear from two major grant awarders before then. Meg
Burford, Chairman of the Hall Management Committee is
confident that the amount will be raised, and expects
building of a new hall to start at the end of September.
Brindle Parish Council Chairman, Steve Williams,
urges everyone in the community to support the hall and
donate whatever they can, now. He says "It is vital
we have a facility in the village that caters for
everyone. The Parish Council has already pledged £10,000
and is monitoring the situation closely. We plan to have
a meeting with the Hall Chairman at the start of August
to see what else we can do".
Party
The hall Social Committee are having an "Out with old
and in with the new" party at the hall from 6.30 p.m. on
Sunday, 31st July; everyone is welcome and the event is
free (donations to the barbeque would be most welcome).
The hall will be in use right up to the end with a
children's party (private booking) in the afternoon,
followed by the party.
Pictures found

A series of photographs showing the current building
in various stages of being built in 1982 have been found
when we were clearing the hall ready for closure. We
will feature more on the site soon.
12th July 2005
Hall to close at end of July
After being well used over the last 23 years, the
Management Committee have decided that it is not
economic to bring the hall up to the standard required
to enable its annual licence, issued by Chorley Borough
Council, to be renewed.
With a decision imminent in respect of major funding
for a new building on the current site in Water Street,
Brindle members of the Management Committee felt it was
not worth spending money on something that may be pulled
down in less than 8 weeks. With over £105,000 already
raised or pledged, the hall was recently awarded a
further £50,000 grant towards a new brick and slate
building. With the cost of the new hall being £178,000
they are still some £23,000 short to enable building to
start in October.
Meg Burford Chairman of Brindle Community Hall said
"Quite simply we have to raise the amount by the end of
July or lose the £50,000 grant. We are awaiting
decisions in the next two weeks on the rest of the
funding required, but we have no guarantees we will get
it." An urgent appeal has gone out to the local
community to make up the shortfall and they have less
than three weeks to raise the money or the hall closes
for good. So far some £1,400 has come in from various
sources, and hopes are high that the money will be
raised.
Steve Williams, Chairman of Brindle Parish Council
said "The hall is at a crucial stage. There has never
been a greater opportunity for a new building to be
built. It could be open in the Spring if everyone in the
community makes a contribution, large or small." He went
on to say, "The hall is the focal point of the village
and is the last remaining facility open to all, young
and old, seven days a week. If it goes the same way as
the shop and the Post Office we will have nothing left
in the village. The Parish Council is monitoring the
situation closely and will meet with the Management
Committee before the end of the month, hopefully it will
be good news by then."
The Hall Management Committee is meeting on Tuesday
evening (12th July) to finalise closure plans and get an
up-date on fundraising. Meg Burford says "This is make
or break time, not only for us but the whole community."
Further information can be obtained by calling Mrs.
Burford on 01254 852944 or cheques made payable to
'Brindle Community Hall' can be sent to Mrs. J. Clough,
27 Smithy Close, Brindle, Chorley PR6 8NW.
Parish Council Chairman helps spread
the word
Steve Williams kicked off the last ditch publicity
campaign by appearing on the BBC Radio Lancashire
Drivetime programme.
Presenter Graham Liver asked how some £20,000 is
going to be raised in just 20 days. Steve replied:
"We are keeping calm! We are appealing to the community,
businesses in the area and people who used to live in
Brindle to help and support us. We are hopeful. We
believe the community will rally round. If not, there's
just going to be a hole in the middle of the village,
We're not going to give up on this".
Steve will also be appearing in the local press in
the next few days to make sure as many people as
possible are aware of the latest developments and to get
as many people as possible to give to the appeal.
June 2005
Major funding awards expected soon
We have been advised of impending award of major
funding from two awarding bodies, which could see a
further £60,000 being added to our fundraising total. A
formal announcement is expect by the end of June, 2005
but this is good news for the hall and should see
building work commence in 2006.
More information about Parish
Institute founders
Brindle Historical Society Secretary, Steve Williams,
recently acquired details and pictures of three members
of the Hartley family who were instrumental in getting
the original Brindle Parish Institute established back
in 1923. We intend to add a feature about the Hartleys,
who lived at Crabtree House in the village from 1912
until 1934, to the site shortly (it will also be on the
Historical Society website).
In addition, details of Thomas Whitehead (the first
President of the Institute) have emerged. He played
cricket for Lancashire, appearing for them in the 1884
season. Mr. Whitehead lived at Brindle Lodge and was a
Solicitor in Preston, as well as having business
interests in coal. Interestingly, he also had a private
railway halt on the Blackburn to Preston line, close to
Hoghton Station, and the train stopped for him each
morning so he could travel (First Class, of course) to
his office the town.
21st September 2004
Sadly, our fourth bid to the Lotteries Board was
unsuccessful - this area is not a priority (old people
don't seem to count); we're too rich and we're not big
enough. But we are not dismayed, and have already
planned a campaign of applications to various grant
giving Trusts for the next few months. We also believe
that we may also be able to cut the cost of building the
new Hall and are working on this; more details soon.
May I take this opportunity to clear a few things up.
The Community Hall is NOT closing in October. In
addition, the Community Hall car park always gives
priority to hall users but we are happy for parents,
etc. to use the car park to set down and pick up their
children for school.
We welcome the initiatives to work more closely with
the School and the Church as we all have our different
roles to play. The Community Hall has its roots in 1923
when the original Brindle Parish Institute was set up
with the aims of providing and maintaining a village
hall and recreation ground for use of everyone in the
area regardless of age, politics or religious opinions -
this is still the aim of the charity today and we need
everyone's help to maintain our tradition.
We have a number of forthcoming events. On the 16th
October we will be holding 'Brindle Cuckoo Walks' - a
chance to explore the beautiful countryside. There are
walks of 3, 6 or 12 miles available. Each entrant will
receive a route sheet, refreshment stops on the way
round, a meal at the end, a free embroidered badge and a
certificate. There are modest entry fees and we hope
that people from the School and Church will use it as an
opportunity for a sponsored walk. Entry forms will be
available in the Church or at the School; ring Meg
Burford on 01254 852944 or Mike McGovern on 01254 851176
or email burford@daelnet.co.uk. On the 30th October is
our Hallowe'en Party Night with fancy dress, a spooky
story, and other fun. The 11th December sees our
Christmas Dance - a night with a difference; more
details nearer the time.
Meg Burford

A big thankyou to Miss Aspinall (pictured), owner of
the Brindle Estate.
She visited the Hall earlier in the year and kindly
donated £10,000 towards the new hall fund (that equates
to £12,800 with 'Gift Aid').

TWO DONATIONS - 80 YEARS APART!
There are quite a number of Brindlers who can claim
to have donated to the fundraising for two halls - 1982
and currently, but one lady remembers her family giving
to the Parish Institute (the original hall) back in
1922!
Nancy Robinson (nee Pilkington) lived as a young girl
with her family on Smithy Lane, close to the centre of
Brindle way back in the early 1920's. She remembered
members of the Hartley family canvassing her parents for
a donation and recently she made a donation to the New
Hall Fundraising Appeal, thereby rightly claiming a
unique achievement.
